Jeff Jarvis, blogger on Buzzmachine.com and self-titled optimist, is preaching progress, and it's awesome. He's pushing a "new architecture of news in the age of links," and he's got some pretty extreme, but rational ideas.
Getting rid of critics and golf writers? Awesome. There’s no way a single media critic can cover everything. The pubic is doing that for us now. And sending readers to other publications may sound a little odd, but according to Jarvis, “we should be supporting journalism at its source.” If a competing publication produces some great journalism, it should be read and recognized. Send people to read it!
Jarvis’ idea for us “do what we do best, and link to the rest” sounds like the mantra of a blogger, but makes sense when you think of the incredible amount of specialized news sites or sources. Take this blog for example. It's set up to cover the event as it happens. If and when the Daily Texan writes about the symposium, they'll write their story and that'll be it. But, by linking to this blog, or any of the stories written by my classmates, they can supplement their story and provide more in depth info for those that want it.
I think I'm becoming an optimist too.

Challenge is to balance issue of "do what you do best" and his idea that people doing journalism should be multi-skilled. This was an unresolved tension in his presentation.
Guy,
Please say more.
That request actually came from me, Jeff Jarvis. Not sure how I became Peter in Blogger.
